In Fiji, lotteries are regulated under the Gambling Act 2009, which establishes the legal framework for all forms of gaming. Only lotteries operated under a valid licence issued by the licensing authority are recognized as lawful, ensuring consumer protections and oversight.
Under section 13 of the Act, a ticket lottery may qualify for either a Class 1 or a Class 2 gaming licence. A Class 2 licence is valid for up to 15 years, as determined by the licensing authority, and applicants must meet age and eligibility criteria before operating. (1)
"A ticket lottery may qualify for either a Class 1 or a Class 2 gaming licence. A Class 2 gaming licence for a ticket lottery shall be valid for such period not exceeding 15 years as the licensing authority may decide."
Purchasing a ticket from any lottery not authorized by the Gambling Act is considered illegal. Section 26 declares that any sale or contract for tickets in an unlicensed lottery is void, entitling purchasers only to a refund of their money. (2)
To ensure your lottery ticket purchase is legal in Fiji, always verify that the operator holds a current licence under the Gambling Act 2009. Unauthorized lotteries carry no legal recourse beyond a refund, and participating in them may expose you to financial risk.
